Up Close and Personal: GRIT Series Instructor Curtis Haven Pipes
February 27, 2015
We all know Curtis Haven Pipes as the amazing GRIT Series instructor at Gold’s Gym Mall of Indonesia, but how well do you really know him? Read this article and let’s get up close & personal with Curtis!
Curtis loves teaching GRIT Series. The high-intensity nature of the class feeds his addiction for high-energy and smash mouth workouts! “I have been involved with GRIT since it first started in New Zealand as HIIT 1 – we’re on GRIT 13 now,” he said. Other than GRIT Series, Curtis teaches the more intense group exercises like Body Pump, Body Combat, CXWORX, and adding to his already thick teaching portfolio, the seemingly easy core-focused Pilates. Surprisingly he also teaches SH’BAM! But before he delved into the world of group exercise, did you know that he was a personal trainer for 8 years back in the US? He was also a multi-sport athlete participating in football, track, wrestling, baseball, and basketball. All the training required in order to be great in sports didn’t deter him; as a matter of fact, it was what he loved about it! Team sport also gave him the fondness for coaching and helping people, which is why he loves teaching group exercise classes now.
He’s only been teaching in Jakarta a year and 2 months, but already he has gained quite a following of class regulars. Being a typical American that talks really fast by default, at first he found it quite challenging teaching with the inevitable language and cultural barrier. But after a while, he managed to break his fast-talking habit and talk in a slower pace. He also learned simple Indonesian words to make his classes easier to follow. The members were the ones who actually helped him adapt by giving him constructive feedbacks. Jakarta’s infamous crazy traffic did frazzle him quite a bit in the beginning, but once he sees everything that the city has to offer, he really enjoys Jakarta! “And it doesn’t hurt that Bali is just 1.5 hours flight away from here so I can go there whenever I want to,” he joked.
Although he came from a family with less regard for health, he lives and breathes fitness and clean eating. Fitness has always been a big part of his life and he always thrives to be healthy. His focus on clean eating and exercising is clearly shown in his rock hard six pack abs that everyone covets. But don’t go asking him to show his impressive abs, he’s quite reserved and shy about it.

So, how can someone get a six-pack like him? He firmly believes that 80-85% of being healthy is getting the proper nutrition your body needs. The rest is proper and effective exercise. So, try to avoid processed food that contains a lot of chemicals that are not good for us. Fried foods and artificial sugars are also bad for you. Organic food is the best option for a healthier food habit because our body is used to everything that’s natural. When in doubt, consult with a nutritionist or a doctor for a complete diet plan catered to your needs and requirements.
His life motto? “I could do anything and everything I want to, and you can’t tell me any different.” He mentioned that even though it landed him in some emotional and stressful situations, but he wouldn’t change a thing. “If you learn something from a difficult situation, it is a positive.” He’s had quite a journey from home back in the US to New Zealand and now here in Jakarta, and what he’s found is that everything is possible if you work for it, remain focused and don’t listen to anyone who doesn’t support your dreams. “Ultimately, it always starts with you. If you do it for somebody else, if you do it for a cause that’s not your own, well, the problem is the cause always changes. But if you do it for yourself (your star player) the cause will not deter you and it will never stop you. The cause will change only based on what you want because you know where you’re going,” he said.
