April 7, 2014

The number of yogis in Jakarta rises every day. That is a fact. This is reflected by the number of Yoga classes in many gyms, independent Yoga studios, and private Yoga teachers that also rises. Considering the city can drive you mad sometimes –if not most of the time-, no wonder Yoga becomes the last resort for keeping the balance of body and mind.

Talking about Yoga is talking about Hinduism and India as the root of this popular form of exercise. Yoga came about from Hinduism philosophy of meditation. When doing Yoga, we must focus our mind to control all parts of our body. Sounds easy, right?

“I recently tried Yoga with one of Indonesia’s popular master yoga. It did not take me a month to notice significant changes in myself. I feel more calm and able to control my temper every time I am facing a problem. Before I did Yoga, I was a very temperamental person. Having experienced significant changes, I have been trying to do Yoga regularly ever since because for me mental health is the key to any success,” said Okta, 24, a freelancer.

A study published in 2009 by Harvard University, Yoga for Anxiety and Depression, proves that Yoga can reduce the impacts of stress, anxiety, and depression. Activities in Yoga such as meditating, relaxing, and socializing with other yogis help relieve stress.

Other study also proves that Yoga is one of the most reliable therapies to help treat mental illnesses. A study by Dr. P. Murali Doraiswamy, a psychiatry and medical professor of Duke University Medical Center which is published in Frontiers in Psychiatry shows that Yoga is a promising treatment for people with depression, schizophrenia, ADHD, and insomnia. The study also proves that Yoga help reduce symptoms of stress that tends to lead us to mental illness.
